A new convention has been added to my list of conventions I am attending for 2007. Izumicon is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and will run from November 2nd to November 4th, 2007. For more information on Oklahoma’s largest anime convention head on over to their official web site here: http://www.izumicon.com/
A new feature to the blog has been added. Cosplayer Spotlight, of which the tab is located on the top menu, is a quarterly article that focuses on cosplayers I have met from around the country that stand out above the others, not just in cosplay design or skill at making a costume, but as a person behind the costume. The first cosplayer has been selected and the article is ready for your enjoyment so… enjoy!
I did it! I vowed I would have all the photos processed before midnight so my weekend can be clear to enjoy what ever I want to do! I did it with 12 minutes to spare! The final used photo tally is 254! I want to thank all the cosplayers, staff and vendors for letting me run wild with my camera and have a truly memorable con! I met many of you and hope to do so again at the next con! Until then… it’s sleepy time! ZZZZZZzzzz! Tired Cameko…..
Cosplayers from the local DFW area will be meeting August 19th in Iriving to meet and greet each other before the festivities begin at AnimeFest in Dallas. I will be there taking photos of the event and of any cospalyers that show up in costume. It’s kind of a bring your own stuff picnicy kinda thingy. Hmmmm… what to bring? WATER. I think I shall contribute by bringing an ice chest of ice cold aqua loco! Hope to see you all there!
A link to the event with all the details can be found at this thread at Cosplay.com: http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=120843
Hello everyone! This is just a bit of FYI for you all. My next convention will be AnimeFest in
I know you are all eager to get your hands on your cosplay photos I took during the weekend. The good news is that I am ahead of my schedule in processing the 1500 images I shot. I should have all photos posted by or before Friday the 10th. Overall I am extremely pleased with the results. I can see my skill has risen a bit more since A-kon 18 but there is still room for improvement. Practice makes perfect, right?
Today when I get off work I will be processing the entire set of photos from the actual cosplay contest. I should have that set posted before bedtime. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did taking them! Okay! Back to work!
WHEN: September 15th, 2007 (Weather Permitting)
WHERE: Japanese Botanical Gardens of Fort Worth, Texas
TIME: 12 (Noon) to 3pm
MINS AND MAXES: I would like a minimum of 5 cosplayers and I can handle up to 15 max. This is a first come, first serve basis. Please RSVP if you wish to attend the photoshoot by sending an e-mail to: kuragiman-at-otakuhigh-dot-com. If I cannot get at least 5 cosplayers on the venue this photoshoot will be cancelled.
COSTS: Nothing for you. Just bring your costume and yourself. Your admission into the garden will be covered. If you damage anything in the park you bought it.
WEAPON POLICY FOR THE GARDEN: No real weapons. All prop weapons must be listed and given to the Garden manager so they have it on record. If you don’t know if your weapon will be allowed or not call (817)871-7685 and tell them about your weapon you plan to bring. They will let you know if it is allowable or not.
For more information on the Japanese Gardens (They are Gorgeous!) you can go here: http://www.fwbg.org/japanese.htm
A Map of the Garden: http://www.fwbg.org/japanese_map.htm
A Map of the Main Garden Layout: http://www.fwbg.org/botanic_garden_map.htm
Meet up will be between 11am and noon in Parking Lot “J”. Consult the main garden map. It is located on the Southern end of the garden grounds just outside the Japanese Garden entrance point. This will allow any of you with more extravagant costumes to get ready before we enter the garden at noon. I’ll have an ice chest with me full of bottled water for all to partake of when you are thirsty since it will most likely get a bit toasty. There are of course water fountains scattered across the grounds too.
This is a great opportunity for you to show off your cosplay work, practice your poses, meet new local cosplayers and for me to get in some valuable camera time before Atsuicon descends upon us at the beginning of August.
If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me or ask here!
Oh, and one more thing. When you RSVP please list which outfit(s)/character(s) you plan to do at the shoot. This will help me get the titles of the photos correct in the gallery.
Hope to see you all there!

The latest con to hit Texas has been a rather special one for me as it showed what Otaku can do when they are threatened… threatened with having their party come to an end, threatened with the possibility of having to go home after having had so much fun already. This con was an example of teamwork and love of the genre. An example of how people can come together to make something happen.
It was Saturday and the con was well underway when an unexpected hitch threatened to shut the entire thing down at 7:30 p.m. The expenses of running a con have never been a secret… it costs a lot and unfortunately this convention overspent and didn’t have enough monetary power to continue going. The damage was to the sum of $12,000. At 6 p.m. the entire con was brought together for the terrible announcement… the con is closing unless $12,000 can be made in the next hour and half to pay off the hotel.
What can Otaku do? Say NO! No to bringing the party to an end! A call was made for donations. With a little under a thousand attendees that meant each person on the average needed to donate $12 bucks or the con was dead, the cosplay contest was dead, everything was dead. I felt this was doable and so donated to the cause and I was not alone. The donation line went out the door. Within 30 minutes an announcement was made. “We have $3000!” A good start but not nearly good enough. Time was running out fast! But then the call came not 10 minutes later. “We have $9000!” “We have $10000!” Cosplayers ran through the con asking for donations! A march for Fandom! Hugs for Dollars! Save a Plushie fund raiser! Even Jesus came down from Heaven and tossed in a wad of cash. A massive cheer went throughout the hotel con area as $12000 was hit.
How does one feel after such an incredible effort? Should I feel cheated that this con forced me to donate to keep it going? Some would say yes but I do not feel cheated. I felt proud and took pride in knowing that ‘I’ and others had taken ownership in a sense and had saved OUR con. It was a con made by fans for fans and the fans had spoken! Our party! You can’t stop the con!
This will go down as a fond memory for me! A fiasco turned into a powerful display of love and friendship among strangers. I LOVE OTAKU! I LOVE ANIME! *Tear*
